Understanding Human Behaviour & Building Trauma-Sensitive Practice Skills

How we behave is shaped by our experiences, relationships and environment. Understanding this allows practitioners to respond more effectively, build trust, and help people participate fully.

This interactive, virtual course explores how lived experiences influence behaviour - and how trauma, stress and everyday challenges can shape the responses of children, young people and their families.

You will learn practical skills to recognise what sits beneath behaviour, support emotional regulation, and use restorative conversations to reduce conflict and strengthen relationships.

Designed for practitioners across the public, charity and community sectors, this course provides both insight and hands-on tools to improve engagement, communication and outcomes.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain how lived experiences, trauma and environmental factors influence behaviour and emotional responses.

  • Identify signs of stress, dysregulation and unmet needs in children, young people and adults.

  • Respond in a calm, informed and relational way when behaviour becomes challenging or conflict arises.

  • Support children, young people and families to regulate emotions and participate more fully in conversations and decisions.

  • Apply restorative and solution-focused communication techniques to reduce tension and maintain engagement.

Written by an experienced Social Worker and Trauma Informed Practitioner, this course offers impactful professional development that can be applied throughout your work.

Please note that course content will include personal reflections, case examples, and interactive breakout room discussions. These elements are designed to help participants delve into the root causes of human behaviours, identify signs and symptoms of trauma, and explore practical ways to support children and adults in their work.
