Supporting families pre-birth
We often receive referrals to support parents and families prior to birth. This can be the case for first-time parents or for those adding to their families. There are a range of reasons and situations. Here are just a few example cases we’ve supported recently:
Parents, welcoming a new baby, had a history of violence and substance use. The Mother also had a previous child who was being cared for by her parents; the circumstances of this had also caused their relationship to breakdown. A Family Group Conference looked at what support the wider family could offer to aid care following a planned c-section, and beyond. This included a plan for respite, sleep, care for the child, housework, and regular access to medical appointments and social groups.
A Mother was being supported ahead of the birth of their first child. This was due to her mental health history and as a result of issues in the father's past related to his older children. A Family Group Conference enabled the family to devise an open, transparent plan of support. This focused on making sure people knew if the Mother's health declined, and what actions would be needed to support both her, and her baby.
17 year old parents-to-be were referred due to concerns around safety in the Mother's family home. A Family Group Conference gathered the wider family of parents, aunts, uncles and friends to explore safe living conditions, support and sleep arrangements for the couple and their baby. A plan was made ahead of the birth so that everyone knew how and when they could support.
