Vulnerable Adults

Family Group Conferences and Vulnerable Adults
Our programme to use family group conferences to address issues for vulnerable adults operates across Hampshire. The programme began with funding from Comic Relief, and is currently funded by Hampshire County Council. Referrals are accepted for any safeguarding concerns and may involve a range of issues, including:
- Elder abuse
- Safeguarding adults with disabilities
- Risk management within Personalisation
The use of FGC for adults is relatively new and from 2007 Daybreak has pioneered this method for addressing elder abuse, with funding from Comic Relief for the first 3 years. Hampshire CC has now agreed funding to extend the availability of FGC for adults across all age groups for a wide range of safeguarding issues.
The start of our work with adults coincided with the implementation of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 which came into effect in 2007. Many of the principles and values of family group conferences are reflected in the Act, with its emphasis on the rights of individuals to make their own decisions, to have their voice heard through the use of advocates, and the involvement of families in making decisions for those who are unable to decide for themselves. More recently the introduction of personalisation, and self-directed support across all aspects of adult services, also links with fgc in empowering individuals to make the choices that are best suited to their own lives and circumstances
“It was a powerful method of enabling the family to find a solution within themselves” – Hampshire care manager
“In one week after six very bad years we left the meeting with clear tasks to move forward looking to the future” – service user
“Exceptionally well thought out, practical, useful and timely” – family member
The Evaluation Report of the pilot programme 2007-2010 details the outcomes and benefits of using FGC to address abuse of older people is now available. (click on “Evaluation Report” for link)
